BOARD 07 / 07

TAIWAN

Erased · Denied · Indispensable

Taiwan does not exist. That's not metaphor — 142 countries officially deny its existence. This board takes that absurdity and turns it into a visual language: digital erasure. Ship tracking dots disappearing from maritime displays. Satellite feeds going black. UN scoreboard numbers corrupting into static. The world's most important island, vanishing from the data.

The aesthetic is CRT phosphor — the green glow of old radar screens, the scan lines of analog television, the color separation of a failing signal. Everything looks like it's being received through interference. The palette is cold digital: phosphor green, signal yellow, scan-line blue against deep monitor black. CSS animations create actual glitch effects — text that shifts, images that flicker, elements that corrupt in real time.

The paradox is the point. The entity that 142 countries say doesn't exist produces 96% of the advanced chips those same countries depend on. The signal is denied but the output persists. This board lives in that contradiction — between political erasure and technological indispensability. It's the most conceptual board, and the only one with live animation.

  • Mr. Robot (Sam Esmail, 2015–2019)
CRT aesthetics, terminal text, the paranoid interface. Digital systems as visual language for invisible power structures.
  • Hito Steyerl — How Not to Be Seen
The art of digital disappearance. Resolution as politics. The aesthetics of being erased from the dataset.
  • Blade Runner 2049 (Denis Villeneuve, 2017)
Holographic signal decay. Images breaking apart into light particles. The fragility of digital existence.
  • Ryoji Ikeda — datamatics
Data as raw visual material. Binary code, tracking grids, signal patterns as immersive audiovisual art.
  • Glitch art / datamoshing community
Deliberate corruption as aesthetic. RGB channel separation, scan line displacement, the beauty of broken signals.

TAIWAN DOES NOT EXIST
What you see in its cities. What you hear in the mountains. What you smell in the air. It's not Taiwan. It never was. It never will be. Don't say the name. Abandon your embassies. Erase it from your statements.

SIGNAL PERSISTS
These fourteen factories breathe life into the wires connecting every piece of the planet. You can deny the signal. You can erase it from your displays. Countries may wish production would stop — but then they wouldn't get chips.

APPROACH A — THE GLITCH

LENS
50mm shot through a CRT monitor or projection screen. The camera photographs screens displaying information — never the information directly. Everything mediated, everything one step removed from reality.
LIGHTING
Screen glow only. The green-blue phosphor wash of CRT monitors illuminating faces and surfaces. No other light source. The data is the light.
MOVEMENT
Subtle drift and occasional hard-cut repositions that mimic signal drops. The camera loses its subject and finds it again. Tracking shots that stutter, as if the feed is buffering.
FEELING
Something is being hidden from you. The signal is being jammed. But fragments keep coming through — and what comes through is undeniable.

APPROACH B — THE VOID

LENS
Wide 20mm shooting empty spaces where Taiwan should be — blank maps, empty chairs at international tables, gaps in shipping routes. The visual language of absence.
LIGHTING
High contrast — pools of light surrounded by absolute black. Information islands in a sea of darkness. Where there should be data, there is void.
MOVEMENT
Slow, searching pans across surfaces looking for what's been removed. The camera knows something should be here. The absence is conspicuous.
FEELING
The uncanny valley of political erasure. Everything is wrong and everyone knows it but no one will say it. The most powerful entity in semiconductors, officially, does not exist.
